2015 Division Gamay Noir “Cru” Methven Family Vineyards Eola-Amity Hills AVA

The 2015 growing year proved to be the driest and hottest on record in the Pacific Northwest - a benchmark we can’t help but attribute to our changing global climate. But true to form, Gamay Noir showed great resilience to the weather, maintaining great acidity to balance it’s fruit and texture. This varietal is such fun to work with, it has been a pleasure for us as winemakers to see it’s deliciousness gain in popularity in the US in recent years!

We now have five exciting vintages of Gamay experience at Methven Family Vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills - one, our favorite sustainably farmed (LIVE Certified) Gamay vineyards. We further honed our vinification skills by splitting the Gamay at Methven into two separate fermentation lots, one that was destemmed (more commonly known as the traditional method) and the other that was a whole cluster carbonic fermentation in closed stainless steel tank. Both ferments were inoculated with a pied de cuve build up (early harvest grapes) used with the hopes of harnessing the native yeasts on the site. Both ferments were our most successful ever, having learned in the past from this site that keeping the ferment temperature higher during crucial moments in the yeast cycle really lends to very solid and expressive fermentation.

We truly feel the time learned understanding this site is really paying off, as we are simply stunned with the results of both Methven Gamay ferments in 2015. Having two high quality lots to work with gave us plenty of options to choose from to put our “Cru” level Gamay. We especially liked the mix of approximately two thirds traditional fermented with one third carbonic fermented, which really emphasized the classic Beaujolais Gamay character.

The 2015 Division Gamay Noir “Cru” returns with a gorgeous harmony of carbonic herbal and fruit notes layered in with the structure and generous mineral character extracted from the traditional ferment. This translates to our favorite Gamay bottling yet! Aromatically, this wine has amazing umami - a satisfying stew of rocks, strawberries, fresh herbs and white pepper. The palate has near perfect mid-weight and has silky texture that lingers well after the sip. We were fortunate enough to make 110 cases this year and are excited that this year’s wine will find a way to many happy Gamay lovers!
